After graduating from Tufts University, Omidyar worked for Claris, which was a subsidiary of Apple Computer. He worked there in the team that upgraded MacDraw to MacDraw II.

The computer science graduate co-founded Ink Development, which was a pen-based computing startup. It was later re-branded to an e-commerce company and named eShop. Microsoft later acquired eShop for $50 million on June 11, 1996, from which he earned $1 million. Another Entrepreneur, Jamie Siminoff has a net worth of $300 million.

Before the sale of eShop, in 1995, then 28 years old started writing a codebase for an online place to enable a person to personal sales. The site was released on September 4, 1995, as Auction Web. Auction web was renamed by Omidyar as eBay in 1997. By that time, the site was hosting 800,000 auctions a day.

In addition, eBay launched its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in September 1998, which made Omidyar a billionaire.
