The charismatic actor was born Alan Wolf Arkin on the 26th of March, 1934. He was born in the city of Brooklyn, New York. His father, David I. Arkin was also someone with immense talent. David was well regarded as a teacher, painter, writer, and lyricist. He was perhaps best known for co-writing Three Dog Night’s song, “Black and White”. Alan Arkin’s mother, Beatrice (née Wortis) was also a teacher.
Even though Alan was raised in a predominantly Jewish family, he wasn’t forced to strictly follow the Jewish culture or religion. His grandparents migrated from Ukraine, Russia, and Germany. Alan’s parents moved to Los Angeles when he was 11 years old. Unfortunately, his father would lose his job as a set designer due to a lengthy 8-month-long strike in Hollywood.
Both of Arkin’s parents were accused of being Communists in the 1950s Red Scare movement. After his father refused to disclose his political leanings, he was fired from his job. Even though he challenged the dismissal, he only managed to find his vindication after his passing.

Arkin’s first role under the spotlight would come in the 1950s where he would appear as a singer and a guitarist in the folk group known as The Tarriers. After a few hits, he would go on to sing for another folk group called The Baby Sitters. He was also part of a comedy group that called themselves “Second City”.
He would go on to make his first feature film acting debut in a minor role in the musical, “Calypso Heat Wave”, and the rest was history. Over the next seven decades, he would go on to appear in over 90 movies and TV shows.
The talented actor was known not just for his acting prowesses, but also for his comedic chops and timing. He was considered an amazing character actor and was well-regarded in the entertainment circle as a generational talent.
His breakthrough role would come in 1970, as Captain Yossarian in the movie adaptation of “Catch-22”, a book written by Joseph Heller. Arkin co-starred alongside contemporary heavy hitters like Bob Balaban, Orson Welles, Martin Balsam, and Jon Voight. For his role, Alan received a Laurel Award nomination.
