Ayelet Zurer was born in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on June 28, 1969. Her father worked for the government and painted for much of his life. Whereas her mother moved to Israel when she was 16 years old. 

Zurer's mother escaped the Second World War by hiding in a monastery in Slovakia. With a painter father, Zurer anticipated that Ayelet would pursue a career in painting; instead, she chose to attend acting school and pursue a career as an actor. 

The actress started theater school in Israel. But after moving to New York Ayelet completed her academics while simultaneously performing off-Broadway.
