On December 9, 2001, Kathleen Peterson, the sister of Candace, was discovered dead on the staircase of her own home in North Carolina. Her husband, Michael Peterson, immediately contacted the police and informed that about Kathleen's death. He added she might have felt down after consuming an excessive amount of alcohol.

After doing some investigation, the autopsy revealed that Kathleen had died from blunt force trauma, not from falling down the stairs. So, the prime suspect became Michael Peterson and later, he was charged with first-degree murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment. However, in 2011, a judge vacated the conviction after finding that one of the prosecution's witnesses had lied.

As a result, Michael was released from prison in 2017. The case inspired several documentaries and Cadance was part of those documentaries. After Michael filed for the case, in the court trial, looking directly at Michael, Cadance said: 

''You brutally took the life of a woman that provided for you, guided your children, and loved your children. She loved you. She opened her heart and home with joy. Kathleen was the best person you ever had in your life.''

Life Of Kathleen Peterson Before Death 

As mentioned above, Kathleen Peterson was an American businesswoman and philanthropist who died under suspicious circumstances in 2001. At the time, her death made a headline.

Yet, Kathleen died on December 9, 2001, in Durham, North Carolina, United States. But, she was buried after four days, on December 13, 2001.

Kathleen was born on February 21, 1953, in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. Throughout her life, she acclaimed fame as a successful Nortel business executive. She attended McCaskey High School in the early '20s. After that, she shifted to Duke University for her graduation.

At Duke University, Kathleen was the first woman to be accepted into the school of engineering. After finishing her studies, she held executive positions at pharmaceutical and IT companies.

Kathleen was married to Michael Peterson, an American novelist. The couple was married in 1996, the same year Janice Huff got married. Kathleen's daughter from her first marriage, Caitlin Atwater, used to live together with them, but she is out of the spotlight now.

Caitlin has two half-siblings, Margaret and Martha. They share only share a common father, Michael. In contrast, their mother is Patricia, with who Michael divorced in 1987 and moved in with Kathleen.

Did Michael Peterson Kill Kathleen?

In 2003, Michael Peterson received a life sentence without the possibility of parole after his wife Kathleen was discovered dead at the base of their Durham mansion's black staircase. Peterson, who said that she had died from falling while he was smoking a cigar outside, was convicted of murdering his wife for insurance money.

When Michael was taken to a holding cell, he told his daughters that he loved them and that everything would be okay. In 2017, he entered a guilty plea for voluntary manslaughter, known as an Alford plea, and was released after serving his sentence. 

Peterson has published two books since his release, "Behind the Staircase" and "Beyond the Staircase," in 2019, which provide insight into his trial, time in prison, and life after release.
