Filpi was First served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II and he began his acting career as part of a comedy team with fellow Pittsfield resident George Morell. Filpi moved to Hollywood, California in the late 1960s in order to go after his acting career.

His First acting Job was in the 1969 film Wild Gypsies. In 1984 he starred in The Ice Pirates and Pee-wee's Big Adventure in 1985, Life Stinks in 1991, and The Wedding Singer in 1998. 

He also acted in the 2000 made-for-TV films Goodbye Casanova with Yasmine Bleeth. Carmen's final film was in 2002 in the film Eight Crazy Nights.
