Claes Ivar Ljungmark was born in Gothenburg on March 14, 1954. In the Majorna district. In eighth grade, he received his first taste of theater when he appeared in Fernando Arrabal's Picnic on the Battlefield. 

Claes intended to pursue medicine, but acting became his true calling. He applied to the theater as a stage worker at the Stora Teatern in Gothenburg after finishing high school and operating in the military as a submarine. In Uppsala, Sweden, from 1975 to 1976, he worked as an actor with the independent theatrical company Panikteatern.

Between 1976 and 1980, he attended Gothenburg's Statens Scenskola, now the University of Stage and Music. After stage school, he worked at Stockholm's City Theater and was a member of the theater's permanent ensemble until 2006.
