Inside Carlos Santana's personal life: The legend has been married twice!
A legendary guitarist and luminary, Carlos Santana hits a milestone as he celebrates his 76th birthday and another glorious year in the industry. Santana, with his five-decade-long career, and a massive cult following, has been an enormous force in rock and roll, and Latin Jazz.
The ten-time Grammy winner first took the world by storm in the late 60s and 70s. The guitarist's namesake band, Santana, which he started in 1966, is one of the best-selling groups of all time. The Carlos fronting band, which consists of eight more members, reached a groundbreaking feat when it won eight Grammys in a night for their 1999 album, Supernatural.
Who is Carlos Santana Married to?
Santana's current nuptial with Cindy Blackman Santana is his second attempt at marriage. The legendary guitarist's wife, Cindy, a jazz drummer, has been his ride-or-die since 2010. Carlos Santana's relationship with his love wife expands beyond the closed doors.
Carlos's wife of more than a decade, Cindy, was his touring drummer when their relationship transcended to romance in 2010. The Santana drummer proposed to Blackman during one of their performances in July 2010 and the loved-up couple tied the knot in December 2010.
The couple's star-studded wedding, which included distinguished guests like comedian George Lopez, musicians Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, in Hawaii almost turned haphazard had it not been for the couple's positive attitudes. Bad weather posed an unprecedented problem for the couple's wedding but Blackman thought that it couldn't have gone any better.
"Rain represents mercy," adds Blackman said at the time, adding "It couldn't have been more beautiful." The pair have since mostly kept their personal life under wrap except for their spontaneous appearances occasionally. Calling his wife a strong woman, the legendary guitarist once explained his perfect relationship with Cindy.
"I've always been infatuated with strong women because my mother was like that," said the Mexico-born guitarist. Carlos added, "The way [Cindy] looks at me, the way she touches me, it's like she's my best friend." The twosome's decade-long marriage is back in the news ahead of Santana's upcoming documentary, Carlos.
In his latest conversation with People, the 10-time Grammy winner gushes about his wife and calls his marriage with Cindy a dream come true. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, 76, who now we know is a doting family man, tells how he was praying for a "queen" after his divorce from his first wife and God answered his prayer by sending him Blackman.
"And next thing I know, here comes Cindy. The way Cindy walked like a New York woman, filled with confidence. I was like, 'Damn,'" said the guitarist. Santana's wife, Blackman, 63, is most famously known for her extensive collaboration with Lenny Kravitz, with whom she toured for 18 years. Aside from being a touring drummer of her husband, Cindy boasts a stellar solo career.
The Truth About Carlos Santana's First Marriage!
Unlike his fellow musicians in the business who don't flinch hopping from one marriage to another, Santana is certainly a rare breed. Publicly, the legend has only ever been with two women, Cindy and his first wife, Deborah King, best known as the daughter of musician Saunders King.
Santana married Deborah amid his peak success in 1973 and went on to welcome three kids with her. During their more than three decades of nuptials, Santana and King had managed to establish themselves as one of the most powerful rock couples. Together, the duo co-founded Milagro (Miracle) Foundation, an NGO for under-resourced kids.
Santana's first marriage with Deborah may not have been the charm for the guitarist, but King was a significant force in Carlos's life and journey regardless. As the Black Magic Woman hitmaker said so himself, Deborah shaped and managed his early career.
Santana famously said that he would've been living as a hobo if Deborah had not restructured his business life. The rock industry's most enduring couple shocked fans in 2010 when they announced their separation in 2007. Citing "irreconcilable differences" King filed for divorce in November.
Carlos's ex-wife, King, accused the guitarist of infidelity!
The couple kept the reason behind their split a secret for years until Deborah aired it in her memoir, Space Between the Stars. Carlos's ex-wife claimed that the guitarist was mostly away from home and in a shocking claim, alleged that he had cheated on her. "I sincerely apologized to her and to my kids when I wasn't in my right mind and did something hurtful," Carlos said after the release of the memoir.
Who are Carlos Santana's Children?
Santana is a father to three grown-up kids, Salvador, Stella, and Angelica, all of whom he shares with Deborah. Carlos has been open about how he convinced his kids to follow in his footsteps, although it took his kids some time, and a lot of contemplation before accepting their fate as musicians.
Santana's oldest, Salvador, 40, is a singer, songwriter, and composer. Just like his iconic father, Salvador founded a band of his own, The Salvador Santana Band, in 2004. But unlike Carlos, Sal's choice of instrument is the piano. The famed musician has collaborated with the likes of Beastie Boys, GZA, and Money Mark. Salvador is married and is a father to a son.
Carlos's second child, Stella, is an R&B musician. She has collaborated with her legendary dad and her older brother. Given her relatively new venture in the industry, Stella's profile is a work in process. The second born of Carlos released her first album in 2016 and has dropped some singles over the years.
A mother to one, Stella mostly keeps her life out of the spotlight. The Santana guitarist's youngest one, Angelica, is also in the music business, but her credits and venture remains wrapped so far. She is undoubtedly the least-known of Carlos's children.
