Inside the legendary comedian's love life: Bill Murray has been married twice!
The name Bill Murray doesn't require an introduction but here's some anyway. The legendary comedian/actor, best known for his excellent roles in Lost in Translation, Rushmore, Ghostbusters, and On the Rocks, has been a Hollywood staple for over five decades.
Born William James Murray on September 21, 1950, in Evanston, Illinois, he started his comedy journey with the improvisational comedy troupe, The Second City, in the 70s. Murray rose to stardom with his three-year-long sting on Saturday Night Live the same decade. Bill's rise to fame also coincided with the comedian's venture of a romantic life. Learn more ahead.
Inside Bill Murray's First Marriage!
An ever-lastingly impeccable career to boast about, but is Murray proud of the man he is in real life? Looking at the actor's chaotic personal life, the actor probably looks back at it with remorse. The Oscar-nominated actor hasn't had a myriad of experiences in love unlike his fellow A-listers, but he has been married twice.
The Lost in Translation actor married his first wife, Margaret Kelly, in January 1981. The duo allegedly met on the sets of Bill's 1981 film, Stripes and got married in a whirlwind romance. The then-madly-in-love couple eloped to Las Vegas on Super Bowl Sunday. The couple later organized a second wedding for their friends and families in Chicago.
The SNL fame and Kelly welcomed two sons during their fifteen-year-long nuptials. The duo spend their conjugal life mostly out of the radar and the despite unpleasant way that their marriage ended, Kelly was the woman who stood behind Murray as he climbed his ladder of success.
The pair's personal life hit the headline in 1996 and not for a good reason. The comedian-turned-actor had started an illicit affair with costume designer, Jennifer Butler, who he would eventually marry. Bill and the mother of his two sons finalized their divorce in 1996.
Bill Murray's Second Marriage!
The Ghostbusters actor's second marital experience came sooner than later. He married his former mistress, costume designer Jennifer Butler, in an extravagant ceremony in 1997. Butler, best known for her work in Groundhog Day, Firestarter, and Last of the Mohicans, gave birth to Bill's four sons.
The duo abided by their wedding vows for nearly a decade and in May 2008, all hell broke loose as Butler not only filed to divorce the Oscar-nominated actor but also made some shocking accusations against her then-husband.
Butler accused the actor of domestic abuse, infidelity, alcohol and cannabis addictions, and even went as far as citing that she was "lucky Bill didn't kill her." The Lost in Translation actor neither admitted nor refuted the claims. The pair's divorce was finalized in 2008. Butler died in January 2021.
Who is Bill Murray Dating?
After years of keeping a low dating profile, the Emmy-winning actor has sparked shocking romance rumors. But not as shocking as legends like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro welcoming kids with women as old as their grandkids.
Murray is reportedly dating singer Kelis!
Murray, 72, has, however, joined the trove of Hollywood biggies in their penchant for young women. The Kingpin actor is said to be dating singer Kelis, 43. Murray was spotted cheering for his new flame, as she performed in London last weekend.
A source reveals that the unlikely couple has, indeed, been an item for a while. The pair reportedly bonded after Kelis's second husband, Mike Mora, died of cancer last year. Murray's budding romance with the singer is his first public relationship since Butler's death in 2021.
Bill's new flame, Kelis, real name, Kelis Roger, is best known for her hits like Caught Out There, Good Stuff, Get Along with You, and Milkshake. She was married to rapper Nas, with whom she shares her first son, from 2005 to 2010. Kelis welcomed two more kids from her second marriage with the late Mike.
Bill Murray's All-Boys Brood!
The Ghostbusters actor is a proud father of six sons. He shares his first two, Homer, 41, and Luke, 38, with his first ex-wife, Kelly. In spite of having a bevy of opportunities at his disposal as the son of Bill Murray, Homer has cemented a life that is very much different from his father's.
Bill's oldest son is a chef and restaurateur in New York City. He co-founded the eatery called 21 Greenpoint with his partner Syd Silver, in 2016. Bill has backed his son for his bold ventures and even spoke proudly of him numerous times. The actor's second son from his first nuptial, Luke, is also not a member of the entertainment industry.
Luke's knack and penchant for sports drove him to pursue a career in the field, and as a result, he is today an assistant coach at the University of Connecticut. The Stripes actor cheered for his son as his team won the NCAA Men's Championship game, earlier this year in April.
The Rushmore actor's four sons from his second marriage, Caleb, 30, Jackson, 27, Cooper, 26, and Lincoln, 19, continue to live their lives out of the spotlight. While there's almost little to no information about Bill's three of four sons, Cooper, on the other hand, has tried to stay relevant. He is an actor with credits in the Moonrise Kingdom and The Now.
