George Perry Floyd Jr., widely known as George Floyd, was an African American man who became a household name worldwide after he was killed by Police Officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the United States.

George's death became a symbol of systematic racism in the United States, and protests erupted against police brutality and racism all over the world.

George Floyd's Death

George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after a white Minnesota Police Officer, Derek Cauvin, pressed his knee to Floyd's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. 

Floyd, who was handcuffed  face down in the street, repeatedly stated, " I Can't Breathe," but the police officer ignored his cry and continued till he became motionless and had no pulse. Later medical help was brought, but it was too late. Floyd was 46-year-old at the time of his death.

Floyd's death was captured by some people walking on the street. After the video became viral, the Minneapolis police got severe criticism. Acting immediately, the station fired Derek Chauvin and the other three police officers, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao, who were present at the incident.

Also,Chauvin was charged with second-degree unintentional murder,  third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. On April 20, 2021, he was found guilty on all the charges and is currently waiting for his sentencing, which will be announced on June 25. Meanwhile, he has requested a second trial. The  trial of the other three officers is scheduled for August 23, 2021.

Worldwide Protest Against Police Departments

The murder of George Floyd once again brought forward the longtime issue of Police Brutality and racism in the United States. Though it was during the COVID pandemic, many people came to the streets to protest against the death of Floyd and racism in the country. Protesters used Floyd's last word," I Can't Breathe," as a rallying cry.

Soon, the protest grew all over the country, and the demand for defunding the Police began. Furthermore, countries all over the world showed their support for these protests, and various rallies for Floyd began all over the world.

Floyd's GoFundMe Broke All Record

A GoFundMe account was initiated to support Floyd's funeral costs and benefit his family. This particular site broke a record for a number of individuals donations. It is reported that it received over $13 million from more than 125 countries. Also, several universities started scholarships in Floyd's name.

Furthermore, many organizations and celebrities made  donations to the Black Lives Matter movement during the period. The CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, and his wife made a $120 million donation which was equally split to various historically black colleges and universities.

Who Was George Floyd?

George Floyd was born on October 14, 1973, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to George Perry and Larcenia Jones Floyd. He was the oldest of five siblings and had three children.

Floyd shifted to El Nuevo Rodeo club to work as a security guard. At the same time, in 2020, he started working as a  delivery driver but lost it for driving without a valid commercial license. 

Later, when the pandemic hit Minnesota, the club closed in March, and his personal financial situation worsened.
