Early Life and Family Background

Janine Turner was born Janine Loraine Gauntt on December 6, 1962, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Janice Loraine and Turner Maurice Gauntt Jr. Her father was a petroleum geologist, and her mother was a homemaker. She grew up in the suburbs of Euless and Fort Worth, the middle child between two brothers. Her family was deeply religious, attending a Baptist church regularly. She has commented that she was brought up very strictly, with an emphasis on education, manners, and traditional values.

Artistic Talents and Early Modeling Careers

At an early age, Turner seemed to have the potential and interest in the performing arts as an innate talent. She started training in ballet, tap, and theater and began modeling at the tender age of 3. By the age of 15, Turner had become the youngest model ever signed by the famous Wilhelmina Modeling Agency in New York City.

After working commercially and doing some print modeling, Turner moved back to Texas to continue high school. However, her experience in New York had given her a desire to pursue acting more seriously. She spent the years in high school grabbing her first acting assignment for the episode of the ultra-very well-known series Dallas.

Move to Hollywood and Early Acting Roles

Determined to act, she moved to Hollywood at 17. In 1980, she obtained her first big break as the eternal love of General Hospital, playing Laura Templeton. For this role, she had her natural brunette hair dyed blonde.

Turner next became a regular cast member of the other soap opera, Another World, in 1982–1983. Although she did steady work, she longed for heavier assignments that would demonstrate to the audience her range. She was given her shot in 1990.

Breakthrough Role on Northern Exposure

In 1990, Turner was cast as Maggie O'Connell in the critically acclaimed TV series Northern Exposure. Her portrayal of the strong-willed yet vulnerable Alaskan bush pilot earned her both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She did quite well, as the show was also very popular and ran for six seasons between 1990 and 1995.

Film Roles and Continued TV Work in the 1990s

On the heels of the success of Northern Exposure, she found herself in the 1990s with legions of new fans and more significant film roles. She was the damsel in distress for Sylvester Stallone in 1993's action movie Cliffhanger. In 1995, Turner played June Cleaver in the Leave It to Beaver movie remake. In 1999, she was one of Richard Gere's "women" in the ensemble film Dr. T & the Women.
