After the wedding, the couple became parents of Paul McCallum and Valentine McCallum (born on 10th October 1963). They also adopted a child, Jason McCallum, but unfortunately, he died on 7th November 1989 due to an accidental drug overdose. On the other hand, their biological children have become musicians.

The pair, however, decided to file for divorce citing irreconcilable differences, and separated after 10 years of marriage. Furthermore, they concluded their divorce agreement on 8th February 1967, where both parties decided to co-parent their children since their separation.

Her father was a U.S. Marine who served in the Pacific region during World War II and the Iwo Jima battle. He also ran a stock brokerage company, Jessup and Lamont. He also worked as a playwright and lyricist in the 1960s.

Katherine's dad passed away at the age of 91 on Wednesday, 12th January 2011. Later, she and her six siblings, Carolyn Carpenter Wright, Jake Burton Carpenter, Richard Owen Carpenter, Stephen Owen Carpenter, Posie Owen Carpenter, Margaret Carpenter Jones, George Whitney Carpenter, and their stepmother, Margaret Owen Van Rensselaer (Edward's second wife) held a memorial service at 2 p.m. afternoon at the Trinity St. John's Church 9in Hewlett, Long Island on 15th January 2011.

The tragic moments in Katherine's life did not just happen once, her mother, Kitty died due to several sicknesses in 1971. Before her mother's demise, one of her siblings, George was killed in Vietnam while serving in the United States Marine Corps in 1967.
