Laura Carmichael was born on 16 July 1986 in Southampton, the United Kingdom as Laura Elizabeth Carmichael. Her father Andrew Carmichael is a software consultant and her mother, Sarah Carmichael is a radiographer.

Carmichael has two siblings, an elder sister, Amy Carmichael and a younger sister, Olivia Carmichael. So far, she studied at The Mountbatten School, Shirley Junior School, and Peter Symonds College. Later she enrolled at Bristol Old Vic Theatre Schoo, graduating in 2007.
