Liu has two elder siblings, a brother named John and a sister named Jenny Liu. Concerning Lucy's academic background, she attended Joseph Pulitzer Middle School situated in New York City.
Later, she graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1986. Afterward, Lucy joined New York University, but later she transferred to the University of Michigan (UM). From UM she earned a degree in Asian Languages and Cultures.
