Rightfully regarded as one of the best actresses Hollywood has ever seen, Streep sparks media buzz after a long time as the actress's personal life hits a rough patch.   

Born Mary Louise "Meryl" Streep on June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey, the later Academy-winning thespian was in her 20s when she delved into the acting world. Streep landed her breakthrough in the 1978 miniseries, Holocaust, which won her a Primetime Emmy, but it was a slew of personal experiences that shaped the actress's fervor for acting.

Meryl Streep and Don Gummer's split news has sent the media and fans into a frenzy. But the fact that it has been over six years since the couple separated has come as a bigger shock. The Devil Wears Prada actress and her estranged husband, Gummer, a renowned sculptor, tied the knot in 1978, and together, are parents to four wonderful children.   

For decades, Streep and Gummer's stable marriage and their low-key lifestyle made up for a convivial story amid the ruckus-filled Hollywood couples. And to learn that the duo's marriage was nothing but a thought-out sham for six long years has certainly dismayed their fervent fans.  

While confirming the disheartening news, a rep for the couple said, "Don Gummer and Meryl have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart." Although the pair's last red carpet appearance was at the 2018 Oscars- which could have sparked some speculations, Streep continuing to sport her wedding band seemingly saved them from prying fans.   

Meryl and Gummer fell in love when the Academy winner was healing from the heartbreak of her life. Streep's tragic love story with The Godfather actor, John Cazale, is a widely covered story. The then-promising and yet, high-regarded actors were basking in their young love, and hustling for their spots when Cazale was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 1977.  

Cazale, who had a formative impact on Streep's career and life, died within a year of his grim diagnosis, leaving a young Meryl in a widowed state. "I didn't get over it. I don't want to get over it," Streep said of Cazale's death. To Streep's ardent fans and even keen Hollywood watchers, Gummer was her emotional confidant during her emotional distress.  

Streep met Gummer through her brother, Harry, in 1978, and six months later, on September 30, 1978, the pair were exchanging their vows at Streep's parents' home in Mason's Island, Connecticut. In the years that followed until 1991, the spouses welcomed four children- who've all ventured into the entertainment industry.  

As sources at the time shared, Streep's mother and many in her circle were dubious of the pair's nuptial at first. But as years went by and spanned into decades, the couple assured the world of their unbreakable bond. Over the years, The Deer Hunter actress has expressed her gratitude for Gummer in many ways.

"I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives, you've given me," Streep said as she accepted her third Oscar award in 2012 for The Iron Lady. As all enduring Hollywood couples do, Streep and Gummer, too, shared their secrets to sustaining a marriage.  

"Goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while," Meryl told Vogue. The long-married couple's separation news comes after they commemorated their 45th anniversary in September. The estranged pair are yet to share the reason behind their split.

Throughout their marriage, Gummer has been a private figure. The world doesn't necessarily know much about him except for the fact that he is married to the legendary actress. Gummer's now-estranged wife and their kids are all actively working in show business, but he solely stands as an accomplished sculptor.   

Born on December 12, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky, Don is known for his extensive abstract sculptures. A renowned name in the art world, Gummer has consistently held solo and group shows around the world. The pair are doting parents to four kids, namely, Henry, 43, Mamie, 40, Grace, 37, and Louisa, 32.  

The duo's oldest, Henry, is a singer-songwriter. Henry briefly dabbled in acting before discovering that music was his true forte. Henry's tracks have appeared in a number of Streep's movies, including Ricki and the Flash, which speaks volumes about being a son to a legend.  

"The fact that my mom is who she is can be overshadowing, Henry said, adding,  "There are a certain amount of assumptions that go along with that, which tend to be unfair." Henry has been married to Tamryn Gummer since 2019 and shares two kids with her. Streep's second-born, Mamie, is a well-known actress.   

Mamie's most notable credits include Emily Owens, M.D., The Hoax, The Good Wife, Cake, and The Good Fight. She has numerously worked alongside her Oscar-winning mother, in fact, her first acting experience was with Streep in the 1986 film, Heartburn. Mamie is a mother to two kids, whom she shares with her second husband, Mehar Sethi. She was previously married to actor Ben Walker.  

Streep and Gummer's third of the brood, Grace, is also striving as an actress. Grace's credits include a slew of Broadway, television, and mainstream film projects, including Arcadia, The Newsroom, Mr. Robot, and Left the Right One In. Grace, like her sister Mamie, has been married twice. She shares a daughter with her second husband, actor Mark Ronson, and was previously married to Tay Strathairn.  

The estranged couple's youngest adult kid, Louisa, is best known for starring in the period drama, The Gilded Age. Louisa got her degree in acting from the prestigious Yale School of Drama and kick-started her journey from stage plays.
