Enrique's Lavish Wedding with Angelica Rivera
The 57th Mexican President lived a real-life soap opera after tying the wedding knot with Televisa soap opera actress Angelica Rivera. In 2008, the former Mexican president and his now ex-wife started a relationship.
Enrique hired Angelica to help him publicize his political campaign in 2008 where the duo fell for each other. After dating for some time, the former duo tied the knot in November 2011. But this marriage could not sustain for life as they announced their divorce on February 8, 2019.
Was there any Foul Play?
In a report published in The Guardian in 2016, it suggested in irregularities during the annulment of Angelica's previous marriage. Rivera was previously married to TV producer Jose Alberto Castro from 2004 to 2008. The report accused the Catholic church of Mexico of bending its own rules on marriage.
The church in Mexico did not recognize Rivera's first marriage citing that the wedding took place on a beach instead of a church. She has three children with Jose Castro. However, the revealed documents shed some doubts on the church allegation after it showed that the matrimony took place in a church ceremony in Mexico City on December 2, 2004.
Father Robert Coogan said that the annulment process is cumbersome and can take years to complete. Gonzalez Torres, furthermore, wrote,
"Even more worrying to me is that the President of the Mexican bishops' conference accompanied these people, vouching for their upcoming church wedding, when the annulment of Angelica Rivera's first marriage was done fast-track hastily and was full of irregularities."
Father Hugo Valdemar, however, denied such irregularities and said the annulment followed the proper process. He, moreover, also denied any political motives for granting the annulment.
