Saira Khan was born on 15th May 1970, In Long Eaton, Derbyshire, England, where another BBC journalist Wendy Hurrell was also born. Born to her Pakistani parents Jan Mohammed Khan and Hanifa Khan, she is of Asian ethnicity and holds dual nationality (British-Pakistani).

Khan's parents are the immigrants from Kashmir Pakistan. She is from elite Sudan family. Saira's father was very abusive, and he passed away when she was twenty-eight years old.
