From an early age, their son started learning Jiu Jitsu since he followed his parents' footsteps.

At the moment, the pair's son, Zak has became a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under the mentorship of Regis Lebre. He became World Champion as a brown belt in 2009 and win the Las Vegas World Pro Cup Trials as a black belt in 2011. Not just that, he is a four times American Champion, twice Wold Silver Medalist, Bronze Medalist and one time Pan American Bronze Medalist.

The 5 feet 8 inches tall, Steve was born as Stephen Maxwell on 3rd December 1952 in Erie, Pennsylvania near Lake Erie. As a school kid, he used to play varieties of sports, including American football. But, he later understood his true passion is grappling while competing in a wrestling match in his junior high school based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. At that time, he was just 12 years old.

After high school graduation, Maxwell enrolled at the West Chester University (WCU) in Pennsylvania. During his tenure at the university, he rached the highest standard in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA D1)'s Division 1 while representing his college. Later, he graduated with honors after receiving a Bachelor in Physical Education degree at WCU.
