Steven Rinella was born on February 13, 1974, in Twin Lake, Michigan. He grew up on Twin Lake with his two elder brothers Matthew and Daniel Rinella. They all learned to hunt and fish from their father at a young age. 

In 1992 Rinella graduated from Reeths Puffer before proceeding to Grand Valley State University. After that, he enrolled in Montana Missoula to pursue his Master's degree in Fine Arts and creative writing.
