Susan Rice

Susan Rice is an American politician and Democratic policy advisor who is best known for serving President Barack Obama as the 24th National Security Advisor from July 1, 2013, to January 20, 2017. She is a former 27th United States Ambassador to the United Nations, holding the post from 2009 to 2013.

Susan Elizabeth Rice was born on 17 November 1964 in Washington, D.C., United States. She is the daughter of a University professor, Emmett J. Rice and Lois Rice, a corporate executive, and scholar. She graduated from National Cathedral School in Washington, DC in 1982 and undergraduate from Stanford University, B.A. in History, 1986. So far, she holds American citizenship and belongs to the African American ethnicity.

A native of Washington DC, Susan, aged 55, is happily married to Canadian-born husband, Ian O. Cameron. He is a former Emmy award-winning executive producer of ABC News at the St. Albans School chapel.

Rice first met her future spouse, Cameron while studying at the Standford University in the early 1990s. After a few years of dating, they exchanged the wedding vows on September 12, 1992, in a private ceremony. Their big day took place in the St. Albans School chapel among their loved ones.

Since then, they have been enjoying their marital relationship for 17 years with no sign of divorce. Back in 2019, the UN Ambassador, Susan posted their throwback wedding picture on her Instagram page with the caption: "Thanks, baby, for 27 great years and counting. I love you forever".

Her Political Career

Susan initially worked as an international management consultant at McKinsey & Company in Toronto, Ontario. Then she started serving for Bill Clinton administration at the National Security Council in October 1997.

Then she became the president's special assistant and senior director for African affairs in 1995. In 1997, Rice joined Secretary of State Madeleine Albright as assistant secretary for African affairs. She became a senior foreign policy fellow at the Brookings Institute, after serving in this post until January 2001.

She was appointed as Ambassador to the United Nations after Obama won the 2008 presidential election, where she served from 2009 to 2013 and as security advisor from 2013 to 2017. In the 2020 presidential election, she was recently named as a potential vice presidential candidate.

Currently, she is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Aspen Strategy Group, and American Academy of Diplomacy.
