Avis C. Robinson was born as Avis Edna Collins on July 26, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland. Her father's name is Edward Collins, and her mother's name is Annie Collins. She is the third of four children of her parents. Her family consists of black, white, and Nottoway Indian heritage.

Robinson grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, from the age of four as her mother, a cancer researcher, accepted a position at the National Institutes of Health. She attended Colesville Elementary School, White Oak Jr. High School, and the Academy of Holy Cross in Maryland.

Alvis joined the University of Maryland in 1971 and studied economics and urban studies. Also, she took courses in dance and the visual arts. After completing her undergraduate degree in three years, she moved to San Francisco and joined Golden Gate University.  She earned her Master's degree in Economics and Finance from Golden Gate and later from Harvard.

Avis C. Robinson started painting in high school and took up quilting in her 20s. However, she did not begin her career as an artist till the 2000s. After completing her studies in the late seventies, she joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) as deputy director of the Office of Atmospheric Programs.

Robinson remained with EPA for years before transitioning into philanthropy. She founded the Washington Metropolitan Scholars Program with the goal of helping more African-American students reach elite colleges and universities.

Avis's career as a professional artist started when her mixed-media portrait of Abraham Lincoln was selected to be permanently installed in the newly renovated entrance lobby of Ford’s Theatre in Washington. Since then, many of her paintings and fabric works are installed in many buildings, including at the lobby of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York.
