Robinson remained with EPA for years before transitioning into philanthropy. She founded the Washington Metropolitan Scholars Program with the goal of helping more African-American students reach elite colleges and universities.

Avis's career as a professional artist started when her mixed-media portrait of Abraham Lincoln was selected to be permanently installed in the newly renovated entrance lobby of Ford’s Theatre in Washington. Since then, many of her paintings and fabric works are installed in many buildings, including at the lobby of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York.
