Brown was born on 16th March 1981 in Detroit, Michigan, U.S. His birth name is Daniel Dewan Sewell. His father is a half Filipino who was a house DJ while his mother was a housewife. 

Having a musical environment he soon pursued his career as a rapper. His first hip hop group was Rese'vor Dogs with two other fellow members, Dopehead and Chips.
