John Seigenthaler

John Seigenthaler was a famous American Journalist. The multi-talented journalist is also a writer and political figure. He will be remembered as a prominent defender of First Amendment rights. John was active in the journalism sector for more than six decades.

John Seigenthaler was born as John Lawrence Seigenthaler on July 27, 1927, in Nashville, Tennessee. He was born the eldest son among the eight children born to John and Mary (Brew) Seigenthaler. Much about his parents is not shared with the public. He attended Father Ryan High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946–49, achieving the rank of sergeant. He also participated at the American Press Institute for Reporters at Columbia University.

Death of John Seigenthaler

John is no more with us. He passed away, leaving behind this beautiful earth on July 11, 2014. Shortly before this eighty-seven birthday. Seigenthaler died of complications from colon cancer. He lost the fight with cancer. 

He was battling with cancer for some years before his death. His family surrounded him in Nashville, Tennessee at the time of his death. John had the privilege to work for more than two presidents in his career.

John lived a happy married life along with his wife, Dolores Watson. The love birds exchanged their wedding vows in 1955 in their hometown, Nashville. They had been dating for sometime before exchanging their wedding vows.

John started his Journalism career in 1949 after joining the Nashville newspaper The Tennessean. He had to resign from the office to work as Robert F. Kennedy's administrative assistant in 1960. 

Six-Decades Long Career In Journalism

Seigenthaler began his journalism career as a police beat reporter in The Tennessean city room after his uncle encouraged an editor about his talent. On April 21, 1961, Seigenthaler was the only Justice Department figure to witness a meeting between Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. 

Seigenthaler was also founding editorial director of USA Today from 1982 to 1991. John is the sole writer of three books published to date. John released his first book in 1971 under the name, A Search for Justice. Then in 1974, another book, The Year of the Scandal Called Watergate. 

For his contribution to American Journalism, John won several national and international awards. In 1996, Seigenthaler received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award as well as an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Colby College.
