McG also runs Wonderland Sound and Vision, a production business he formed in 2001 to supervise the production of the films and television series he's worked on since Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Thunder Road, a reality show described as an automobile version of Wipeout, was sold to C.B.S.; Limelight, a recent version of Fame based on the life of Pharrell Williams, who was also executive producing, was sold to A.B.C.; and Human Target, loosely based on the comic book of the same name—about a bodyguard was sold to Fox. Only the latter, which premiered on January 17, 2010, lasted two seasons, was shown on network television.

Nikita, a remake of La Femme Nikita, was also given a series order by The C.W. that year. McG was suspended to helm Puzzle Palace for Summit Entertainment on October 11, 2011, after being named the Kodak filmmaker of the year by CineAsia on December 11, 2008. Warner Bros. Television created the series in collaboration with Wonderland Sound and Vision. McG, Robert Singer, Phil Sgriccia, Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver, John Shiban, Ben Edlund, and Adam Glass served as executive producers with Kripke. A former executive producer and director, Kim Manners, died of lung cancer during the fourth season's production.

From 2005 through 2013, Joseph McGinty Nichol served as an Executive Producer on 169 episodes of the first eight seasons of Supernatural. He stays on the program as an Executive Consultant after stepping down.

The series was shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, and the surrounding locations, and it took almost 10 years to produce after creator Kripke tried unsuccessfully to sell it for numerous years. The pilot drew an estimated 5.69 million viewers, and the first four episodes' numbers convinced The W.B.C.W.'s to renew the series for a full season.

McG was born Joseph McGinty Nichol on August 9, 1968, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, U.S.AW.B.C.W.'s. Joseph McGinty Nichol grew up in Newport Beach, California, but was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. To prevent misunderstanding, his mother gave him the nickname McG. His uncle and grandpa were both called Joe.

McG met Mark McGrath while a student at Corona del Mar High School. He intended to be the lead vocalist of a band he founded with McGrath at first. He was unsuccessful as a frontman, so McGrath was convinced to take over. Rather, until he was 22, he worked behind the scenes for the band as a producer and marketer.

McG went on to UC Irvine and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. As Sugar Ray, the band enjoyed a string of hit songs, was signed to a label and embarked on a tour. McG worked as a still photographer, photographing artists and bands from the surrounding area. In 1993, he founded G Recordings as a result of this experience.
