Avery Haines is the sibling of Emily Haines, the lead singer with the group Metric. In 2016, Haines married her partner, Mel, eight weeks and one day before the Orlando shooting occurred, after which Haines came out publicly to say she was in a same-sex relationship.

Avery Haines was born on November 28, 1966, in New Mexico, United States. She relocated to Canada and started her career on the radio—first as a reporter with CFRB 1010 in Toronto. 

She also did some national health shows for the Discovery Health Network early in her career.

In the late 1990s, Haines worked as a fill-in anchor for CTV Newsnet. In 2001, she moved to CityNews in Toronto as a health reporter. With time, Haines became influential as a senior reporter and anchor, hosting primarily the award-winning investigative program "Inside Story."
