Patricia Brentrup was sued for $80 million by her former neighbors in December 1998 for starting a fire. Brentrup's flat was covered in flames. Four individuals died (two men and two women), and roughly twenty others were wounded due to the fire in a Manhattan high-rise apartment. 

Similarly, the fire broke out when the flames grabbed a dried-up Christmas tree, according to the investigator. The Culkins did not shut the apartment door as they hurried out of their residence to avoid a fire.

Furthermore, this enabled smoke to infiltrate the corridor, resulting in injuries and deaths. Patricia and her six children were at the apartment at the time. Her son Macaulay had already moved out, but he still visited his mother and siblings regularly.
