Jamie Redford and Shauna were very close growing up. Closest in age to each other, the two went to the same schools and the same universities.

Many fans are possibly aware of the dark times in Shauna's life. The brutal killing of her then-boyfriend Sidney Wells, a now cold case, was a time of great sadness that left her depressed for years.

A Brief On Sidney Wells And Shauna Redford's Relationship History

In 1983, Sidney "Sid" Lee Wells was studying journalism at the University of Colorado Boulder & was enrolled in the Navy ROTC program. Sid, a promising student, supported himself by working at a local hotel called the Boulderado while attending college.

During the summer of that year, Sid lived in a condominium in Spanish Towers with his brother, Sam, and a roommate. The condo belonged to their mother for them to live in while attending college.

Shauna Redford also lived in the same apartment complex and met the young Navy man. They fell in love and dated happily for three years. There were even rumors of an engagement.

The Tragedy

Sid and his brother had decided to get a roommate as they needed the money. That is how the local drifter and college dropout, Thayne Alan Smika came to their lives. He was later revealed to be suffering from mental issues and blackouts.

On August 1, 1983, Sid was found dead in his apartment, killed by a single gunshot to the back of the head. Smika was the primary suspect in the case. At the time, Sid's brother was out camping and Sid had decided to confront Smika about the unpaid rent.

Later, police found a shotgun and cartridges in Smika's closet. There were already reports of him carrying something long and stiff across the parking lot and loud bangs being heard on the day of the murder.

Also, rumors of cocaine trading were already there. Sid was a regular dealer and his murder could have been due to drugs.

Main Suspect Smika Was Acquitted But Has An Active Warrant

Smika the main suspect in Sid Wells' murder, was found at his parents' house in Akron. The gun found in Smika's parents' home matched the shell from the bullet that killed Sid, leading to his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder on October 6, 1983.

However, due to concerns that the police mishandled evidence, the district attorney at the time, Alex Hunter, refused to take the case to trial. Despite strong evidence against Smika, the grand jury was restricted from charging him with any criminal conduct.

Smika was released without further charges and remained in Boulder for a while. But he eventually disappeared in 1986 after telling his family that he was leaving town. 

Years later, in 2012, a new district attorney named Stan Garnett approved a warrant for Smika's arrest, but to this day, he has not been found. There is also a bounty for his information by the FBI.

The Redford Family Reaction And Support For Shauna

Robert Redford was in Buffalo, New York when he received a call from his daughter Shauna, who was in distress. Shauna informed him about her boyfriend, Sidney Wells, being found dead in the apartment complex. 

Redford tried to console Shauna, but she was in a terrible state. Jamie, Shauna's brother, and a fellow Colorado University student comforted her while Redford rented a jet, picked up Shauna's mother, and flew to Denver to be with his kids. Amy was a baby at the time.

Shauna was in great distress and grieved her dead lover for years. The press attention did not help as they never stopped hounding the family. Shauna was publicly seen as a mess and articles about her depression were published almost religiously.

The funeral of Sid Wells was held at Christ Congregational Church in Colorado. The atmosphere there was chaotic, as tabloids had reportedly paid locals to climb trees and take photographs of the mourners. 

Redford who attended had even hired bodyguards due to the press intrusion. But even they were disturbed by the whole situation. The event left a lasting impact on the Redford family and they became even more reclusive.

Shauna Had Depression For Years

The death of Sid Wells left Shauna depressed and anxious. Her family tried their best to support her and even took her to another continent. 

However, she took a long time to recover despite everybody's efforts.

Shauna Redford Had An Accident

In 1984, Shauna was in an accident when her car plunged into the Jordan River in Salt Lake City. Luckily, some motorists saw the incident and jumped to rescue her.

They heroically pulled her from the submerged car and carried her to safety on the riverbank. Shauna was wearing her seatbelt which helped prevent any serious injuries.

The incident was frightening and Shauna had to be hospitalized for a day. The press had a field day with this and often expanded on her “continually depressed” persona.

Mother To Two Kids

Shauna and Eric are parents to two children similar to American couple Nicky Marmet and Robin Tunney. Their oldest daughter, Michaela was born in 1991 when Shauna was 31 years of age. She is Robert Redford'd oldest grandchild.

After one year, Shauna and Eric welcomed their youngest child in July 1992. His name was revealed to be Conner Schlosser. During that time, Eric, the father, was thirty-three years old.

Eric Schlosser is an American journalist and author. He was born on August 17, 1959, in New York. He is a graduate of Princeton and Oxford.

Schlosser is best known for his best-selling nonfiction books,  Fast Food Nation, Reefer Madness, and Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Accident, and the Illusion of Safety.

Initially, Schlosser began working as a journalist for The Atlantic Monthly in Boston, Massachusetts. He received the National Magazine Award for his investigative reporting on Reefer Madness and Marijuana and the Law which was published in 1994.

Since then, Schlosser has gone on to work on many projects and even produce documentaries. He has continued with his journalism works and books.

Religion

Shauna was raised as a Mormon and even got baptized. However, her family soon got disenchanted with this way of life and stopped practicing.

According to reports, Shauna's mother, Lola was a Mormon while her father, Redford was a Christian. However, he was influenced by his wife and started following the faith. But he didn't get baptized as it is a high commitment in Mormonism.

Later, both parents left the religion; Robert due to growing apart from the church views, and Lola left to follow her Consumer Activism that was not supported by the Mormon church.
