Kyles filed for divorce from her abusive husband in 1978, only after a year of marriage. The two tied the knot in June 1977. However, it wasn't until 1983 that they would finally come to a settlement in their divorce.

John W. Fountain, in his article for The Washington Post, titled A Discordant Union, has quoted one of Kyles's interviews where she talked about her marriage to him. She said:

I know I have to share. It's not to tear him down, because that's still my children's father.....It's not so much focused on him as how I came through it. It's about the abuse I went through. Prayer and faith is what sustained me.

Shirley Kyles is a mother of three. From her short-lived marriage with these had three daughters from You Ought to Be With Me singer. They are Cora Green, Ruby Green, and Alba Green. 

Of the three, Alva is the eldest one. She was born in 1980. Then comes Ruby, born two years later in 1982, and the youngest one, Cora, born a year later in 1983.

The $100,000 Law Suit Against Green

Shirley Kyles's ex-husband Green has made it into newspapers and tabloids for the wrong reasons. In one such instance, Green was filed with a $100,000 lawsuit. The lawsuit came from his former secretary Linda Willis. 

Frank F. from The Grunge has cited the news from Jet, where it is mentioned that the reason was, as Willis said, he physically attacked her while talking about her salary. According to her, Funny How Times Slip Away singer pushed her through the door, which was made up of glass.

The Suicide Of Al Green's Ex-Girlfriend

The news was talked about by everyone when it happened. Mary Woodson, the woman who had previously been in a relationship with God Blessed Our Love singer, took her life by shooting herself at Green's home.

The New York Times, in their paper published on October 19, 1974, reported what happened that night. Woodson took her life, but it wasn't before she physically attacked Green. 

The report says that as Green was in his bathtub, he was attacked by grits which were still hot. Unsurprisingly, he was hurt badly because of it, with the singer having to be taken to the hospital. His neck, back, and stomach were burned because of it. 

Green told the police that he heard the gunshots from the bedroom and, upon reaching there, found the dead body of Woodson. The police also said that they recovered a suicide note from her. The incident happened before he got into a relationship with Shirley Kyles.
