William was born on August 11, 1972, in Yellow Springs, Ohio United States as William Sedar Chappelle. He is the firstborn child of Yvonne Seon and William David Chappelle III. 

His father, William was a statistician before becoming a professor at Antioch College, and his mother, Yvonne worked as a professor at Prince George's Community College. Further, he has two siblings, an older sister Felicia Chappelle, born on May 8, 1968, and a younger brother Dave, born on August 24, 1973.

As per his academic excellence, he studied at Duke Ellington School of arts.
