She was in a harrowing situation two days after Amanda arrived in Mogadishu. The public speaker and her mission partner, Nigel Brennan, along with some Somalian companions, were kidnapped by some Somalian armed people.

Lindhout was in Somalia for a freelance project with France 24. It was August 23, 2008, and she was on her way to conduct interviews at the Internally Displaced Problem (IDP). 

Suddenly, a group of eight insurgents armed with AK-47s from the Hizbul Islam fundamentalist group stopped them. They were abducted and kept hostage for fifteen months.

Torture & Brutal Treatment On Lindhout

During 15 months of captivity, Lindhout experienced a lot of abuse and torture. She felt like committing suicide with the every day of physical and mental torture.

Amanda was chained to the ankle and was in the windowless room. The kidnappers raped and beat her. Not only this, the kidnappers left Lidhout starving with no food and little water with mosquito larvae in it.

Despite being sick, the kidnapper did not stop their brutality on Amanda. She was not provided any medication.

Ransom Of $3 Million

The kidnappers asked the family of Lindhout and her friend, Nigel Brennan, for $3 Million as a ransom. Later, it was decreased to $1 Million. Despite the decrement in ransom money, it was still a huge amount for their family.

Nevertheless, Brennan's family collected the money by selling their family properties. In the initiation of Nigel's sister, the transaction was done through an organization that specializes in the payment of ransom money.

Although Amanda and Nigel got released, they were in pretty bad condition. They could not forget the sufferings they had for years. In addition to this, Lindhout had to face the unwanted attention of many individuals online.

After being released Nigel said that although he does not read Quran anymore, the Islamic principle has guided him. Whereas Amanda has not mentioned if she still follows Islam or not.

Arrest Of Lidhout's Kidnapper

Ali Omar Ader played the key role as the primary mediator. As a result, he was arrested in Ottawa in June 2015. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for threatening Lindhout's parents and kidnapping Lindhout. 

Ader, initially introduced as Adam, sent a message to the Canadian public speaker with "Hello". Terrified Lindhout reached out to the Royal Canadian Police. It took six years for law enforcement to apprehend Adam through a planned operation.

Ader sought forgiveness during the trial. According to the kidnapper, he changed and was not the same old Ader of 2008-2009. He pleads for forgiveness saying

"My request to you is to give me back my freedom … so I can support my whole family,"

Further Investigations revealed that he had no prior criminal history. Kidnapping Amanda was his first heinous act. He did it for a sum of $10,000. 

Amanda Lindhout's Early Life

Did you know? the journalist Lindhout used to work as a cocktail waitress. Born in Red Deer, Alberta, on June 12, 1981, she left her job as a waitress to pursue the journalism field.

Amanda's parents separated when she was a child. Thus, she grew up with her mother, Lorinda Lindhout, in Sylvan Lake reading the National Geographic News.

Lindhout has two siblings, Mark and Nathaniel. Her father had a chronic and needed to depend on his disability payments.

Awards And Accolades

In June 2012, the Red Deer & District Community Foundation recognized Lindhout's impactful work. She was given the Red Deer Women of Excellence Award in Human Services. 

Similarly, the University of Lethbridge acknowledged Lindhout's dedication by awarding her an honorary Doctor of Law degree on May 30, 2014.
