Greg Buis was born in Plano, Texas, on December 31, 1975. He is the youngest of four siblings. Buis has two brothers and a sister. His full name is Gregory Matthew. He went on to Brown University to study anthropology, earning a bachelor's degree in the process. 

Buis lived in Santa Monica, California, throughout his high school years. He has developed essential survival skills as a consequence of his experiences.
