"Dottie never got over the overwhelming guilt she felt because she thought she was responsible for her child’s condition"

When Dorothy went into labor, she wanted to go to the hospital. However, her husband, Harold Nicholas, had taken the car to play golf. So, Dandridge delayed the labor, which in turn cut off oxygen to Harolyn’s brain, resulting in permanent brain damage.

The first child of Dorothy Dandridge, Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas, was born in Los Angeles, United States, on September 2, 1943. On Harolyn's second birthday, Dandridge found something off about her daughter.

Dorothy noticed that Nicholas was not speaking while other children her age could speak well. She was quite tense about it. But people tried to comfort her by giving the example of Albert Einstein. The other parents said

‘Don’t worry, Einstein didn’t talk until he was six years old because he was a genius.'”

Doctor Suggested To Give Up On Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas

Worried mother Dorothy Dandridge took Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas for a check-up. First, Dorothy went to child psychoanalysts who told her that the lack of time spent with Harolyn by Dandridge and her beau was the reason for it. 

Later, Dorothy went to a doctor who noticed something off about Harolyn's brain. The doctor disclosed that Nicholas had brain damage, i.e., Cerebral Anoxia. Furthermore, he suggested Dandridge to give up on her daughter.

Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas Spent Time In a Health Facility

It is hard for any child to stay away from their parents. But fate made Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas stay away from her parents. She spent most of her life with a caretaker and mental facility.

On The Mike Douglas Show, Dorothy Dandridge said

“I never really thought I could give my daughter up to an institution. I guess the longest period of time that I have been away from her was about six months. Actually, she has no conception of time. She doesn't know how long I've been away. She doesn't even know I'm her mother. She only knows that she likes me and I like her, and she feels warmth and that I'm a nice person.”

Harolyn spent some time with her mother after Dorothy could not pay for the facility. However, she was later taken to a mental facility after Dandridge's death.

Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas Lost Her Mother

Staying away from her mother was hard for Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas. But it was even sad when Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas. Although Dorothy said that Harolyn did not even know she was her mother, it must have affected Nicholas as she lost the person she liked.

Harolyn's mother, Dorothy Dandridge, passed away on September 8, 1965, at the age of 43. She was found dead mysteriously in her Hollywood apartment. 

Initially, Dandridge's cause of death was believed to be embolism from a fractured foot. However, the autopsy later revealed that Dorothy died of an antidepressant overdose.

Dorothy had a tough life as she began to lose her professional as well as personal success. To cope with it, Harolyn's mother began to take antidepressants.

Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas's Parents' Divorce

Dorothy Dandridge and Harold Nicholas parted ways after 10 years of togetherness. The former pair were married from 1941 to 1952. 

Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas's parents first met in New York. Dandridge was working in New York and Nicholas was a tap dancer in the Nicholas Brothers group.  

Following her divorce, Dorothy remarried to Jack Denison in 1953. But their married life was short-lived and ended in 1962. Speaking of relationships, Harolyn was not married and romantically involved.

As mentioned, Harolyn Suzzane Nicholas suffered from Cerebral Anoxia. It made her life difficult, making her stay with her caretaker. Harolyn did not amass any wealth.
