Janet Elway is a former American swimmer who competed at Stanford University and led her college to its first national women’s swim titles in 1980. But, she is best known for being the ex-wife of John Elway, a former American Football quarterback, and current general manager.

When Did Janet Elway Marry Her Ex-Husband John Elway?

In 1984, a year after Janet Elway's graduation, the now-former couple married in a low-key ceremony. They had been married for some years and had a great relationship. 

However, their relationship did not survive long, and they divorced in 2002. In late 2003, their divorce proceedings came to a close. Several reports claim that John's demanding schedule damaged their long-term marriage, yet the reason for their divorce has not been revealed, like Candi Fisher.

While there is not much information about Janet and John's marriage, we do know that they have four children: Jordan Elway, Jessica Elway, Jack Elway, and Juliana Elway.

Janet Elway's Career

Janet's professional career began while she was a member of the university swimming squad. She earned six state titles at her institution, including two in the 500-yard freestyle, two in the 200-yard individual medley, and two in the relay.

Elway won a gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley at the 1979 World University Games in Mexico City. In 1980, she guided Stanford to its first national women's swimming victory. The talented athlete holds a national record in the 400-meter individual medley and won the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) meet with a high score.

Janet was also inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports and Pacific Northwest Swimming Halls of Fame in 2005. Janet has served on six boards in Denver, the majority of which have been philanthropic organizations. She helped at a halfway house and started a fundraiser called Janet's Camp. The fundraising aided children in enrolling in YMCA summer camps.

Janet was born in Seattle, Washington, on February 17, 1961. Her parents raised her in the Washington region. 

Similarly, Elway attended Tacoma's Woodrow Wilson High School. Then she attended Stanford University and received a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1983. She joined the swimming squad at university and was quickly recognized as a world-class swimmer.
