Elway won a gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley at the 1979 World University Games in Mexico City. In 1980, she guided Stanford to its first national women's swimming victory. The talented athlete holds a national record in the 400-meter individual medley and won the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) meet with a high score.
