Louis was born as Louis Cameron Gossett Jr. on 27th May 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, the United States of America, where another actor Armin Shimerman was born. Born to his American parents, Hellen Rebecca and Louis Gossett Sr, he is of Afro-American ethnicity and holds American nationality. His father was a porter whereas, mother served as a nurse.

Talking about his education, Gossett attended his high school, where his teacher forced him to audition at Broadway part which resulted among 200 other. Later, Louis received his graduation via Abraham Lincoln High School in 1954.
After graduation, Gossett, attended New York University wit an athlete scholarship. Due his tall height, he was also invited to play basketball during his college days. However, he rejected, in order to pursue his career on theater.

At the young age of seventeen, Louis played in Broadway's Take a Giant Step, chosen by The New York Times drama critics. In the year 1961, Louis made his debut film appearance on A Raisin in the Sun. The same year Gossett also portrayed in the original cast of Jean Genet's The Black.
Moreover, Louis portrayed as a drill instructor Gunnery Seargeant Emil foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, which is considered as one of his most noted role and received an Academy Award for best Supporting Actor.
Additionally, Louis Jr. was the first African-American to receive an Academy Award. Gossett's other famous work includes, The Good Fight, Iron Eagle, Left Behind: World at War and more to mention. In 1997, Louis Gossett, portrayed in the movie To Dance with Olivia along with his co-star Frankie Muniz.

After his divorce, Louis married Christina Mangosing on 21st august 1973. Since marriage, the duo shares a daughter together, Satie (born on 1994).
The couple stayed together for almost two years and decided to separate their ways. The divorce was finalized in late 1975. Furthermore, Louis and Christina does not wishes to reveal the reason of their divorce.
After his separation with Christina, Gossett tied knot with Cyndi James-Reese. She is also known as Start Search Champion. The pair married on 25th December 1987. Cyndi and Louis does not have their own child but they do share an adopted son Sharron (born in 1994).

Louis and Cyndi's marital relationship lasted for five years, ending up in divorce in 1992. None of them has discussed about the reason behind divorce.
Louis Gossett makes a good money from his career as an actor. Till date he has appeared in various movies and television series which adds up to his current wealth.
