Who is Martha Kearney?

Martha Kearney is an English broadcaster and journalist. She is the former main presenter for BBC Radio 4's lunchtime news programme named The World at One, where she served for evelen years.

Martha Kearney was born on 8th October 1957, in Dublin Ireland. Born to her English parents Hugh Kearney and Cathrine Kearney, she is of White ethnicity and holds American nationality. Martha spent most of her childhood in an academic environment.

Her father Hugh is a former teacher at Sussex University and Edinbuirgh University. Kearney joined St. Joseph's (currently known as St Wilfrid's) Catholic School. Later, she studied at Brighton and Hove High School.

After comepleting her school, Martha attended George Watson's Ladies College basedn in Edinburgh. Additionally, Kearney studied classics at St Anne's College, Oxford from 1976-1980. At the time of her final year at the college, she served in a hospital radio as a volunteer.

Kearney started her career as a phone operator on phone-in programmes at the London Commercial Station LBC, later at Independent Radio News in London. 

She served as a reporter on the AM programme before working as a political correspondent when she covered the 1987 United Kingdom general election. Additionally, in 1988 Kearney worked as a reporter at A Week in Politics on Channel 4.

In 1998, Martha was assigned as regular presenter of BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. After two years, she served as a political editor for BBC Two's Newsnight programme. 

Moreover, she also presented Newsnight Review, with increasing frequency. Martha was a candidate to succeed Andrew Marr as the BBC's political editor in 2005, however, she lost against Nick Robinson.

In 2013, Kearney became the winner of her episode of the Great Comic Relief Bake Off against Ed Byrne, Claudia Winkleman, and Helen Glover.

As of now, Martha covers various interesting stories such as facts and best things about other countries like Best of Today: Japan Special. Moreover, in 2018, it was announced that BBC radio 4 news presenters Sarah Montaugue and Martha Kearney will swap their jobs, on the Today programme as Sarah will serve as lead presenter and Martha will be the main presenter.

Martha Kearney is a married woman. Her husband is Chris Shaw, senior programme controller of Channel 5. Martha and her husband married in July 2001.
