Claudia's mother Eve is an English author and journalist. Eve and Barry divorced when Claudia was just three years old. After the separation from Barry, Pollard got married to a broadcaster Nicholas Lloyd with whom she shared a son named Oliver Lloyd. Similarly, Claudia has a half-sister named Sophie Winkleman, an actress. The 40 aged Sophia was born via Barry's second marriage with Cindy Black. 

Winkleman spent most of her childhood in Hampstead, London. Concerning education, she joined the City of London School of Girls. Later, she attended New Hall, Cambridge, and received a Master of Arts degree in Art History.

Claudia and her husband share three children together from their marriage. Two of them are sons, Jake Thykier (born on 17th March 2003), and Arthur Thykier (born in 2011), and a daughter named Matilda Martha Thykier (born in 2006).

On 31st October 2014, Winkleman's daughter Matilda was admitted to the hospital after she was injured when her Halloween costume caught fire. Claudia stated that the costume brushed against the candle.
