Matthew Rhys was born on the 8th of November 1974 in Cardiff, the United Kingdom as Matthew Rhys Evans. His parents are Glyn Evans (father) and Helen Evans (mother), who works as a teacher. He has one sister named Rachel Evans, a journalist.

Rhys attended the Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf in Whitchurch, Cardiff in the Welsh language. Well, his first language is Welsh. Then he went to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London after playing Elvis Presley in the school musical at age 17.
