The following year, he joined The Times and served as a news clerk. He became a staff reporter in December 2007, where he covered news regarding legal issues and performance-enhancing drugs.

Professional Career

The American journalist came into the limelight after he uncovered the story behind Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, and Sammy Sosa, the professional athletes who tested the performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. 

Later in 2015, Schmidt collaborated with other reporters of The Times and disclosed several stories about Justice Department charging FIFA executives. 

Hillary Clinton's Email Controversy

In mid-2015, The Times journalist revealed that Hillary Clinton had an alternate email account when she served as the secretary of state.

When this information was exposed, Schmidt was serving as the lead reporter for the Times. Later, the defenders of Clinton claimed that the story covered by Schmidt is unfair, which was criticized by the Media Matter and other groups.

Later, David Brock, the chairman and the founder of Media Matters wrote a letter to The New York Times saying, 

''prominent correction as soon as possible.'' 

The New York Times, however, did not follow the letter, which led the inspector of the State Department to accuse Hillary Clinton of using a secret email account and violate the State Department's record-keeping policies.

On 16th May 2017, Michael uncovered another exciting story as the ex FBI director James Corney wrote an FBI memo citing Donald Trump's order of James to stop the investigation of Michael Flynn
