When this information was exposed, Schmidt was serving as the lead reporter for the Times. Later, the defenders of Clinton claimed that the story covered by Schmidt is unfair, which was criticized by the Media Matter and other groups.

Later, David Brock, the chairman and the founder of Media Matters wrote a letter to The New York Times saying, 

''prominent correction as soon as possible.'' 

The New York Times, however, did not follow the letter, which led the inspector of the State Department to accuse Hillary Clinton of using a secret email account and violate the State Department's record-keeping policies.
