In a MasterChef Italia episode of January 2018, Joe made numerous remarks regarding Chinese men while giving sexually suggestive statements to the women. Later on, he did issue an apology stating:

"This was a scripted segment shot in a Milan nail salon that I've gone to regularly. I know the women, and we were given the questions to discuss in advance. That said, it's clear that some of what I said was in poor taste and not reflective of my views. I'm sorry I said those things."

Even his business partner, Mario Batali, couldn't escape the controversy when he was accused of sexual harassment. It was reported that he had sexually assaulted and harassed many women, including an incident in 2005 where he drugged and sexually harassed an employee.

After that incident came out to the public, Mario was forced to give up his shares in restaurants in 2019 and sold them to Joe's sister Tanya Bastianich Manuali.
