Bethany had to give up her left arm to survive. Now with only one arm, surfing was a difficult task, let alone doing it professionally. She described the shark attack like this:

"I was holding onto my board, with my thumb, because I probably didn't want to get pulled under. It was like pulling me back and forth, not like pulling me underwater. Just like, you know how you eat a piece of steak? It was kind of like that."

However, even after losing her arm, Bethany didn't give up. Through her sheer perseverance and passion, she was back on the surfing scene only twenty-six days after. Then two years later, she went on to become the national champion.

The shark attack inspired Bethany to create the Soul Surfer film, which was released in 2011. It shows how she lost her arm in the shark attack and how she recovered. The film inspired many who watched it and earned over $47 million.
