Atz Kilcher was born on 2 September 1947 in Homer, Alaska, United States. She is the eldest son of American-Swiss politician, Yule Kilcher and his wife, Ruth Kilcher. They emigrated to Alaska from Switzerland in the late 1930s.

Kilcher has seven siblings named Otto Kilcher, Mossy Kilcher, Sunrise Sjoeberg, Catkin Kilcher Burton, Fay Graham, Wurtilla Hepp, and Stellavera Kilcher.
