Belva Davis was born Belvagene Melton on Thursday, October 13, 1932, to John Melton and Florence Howard Melton in Monroe, Louisiana. Her father was a sawmill worker, whereas her mom was a laundress. She has three siblings whose identity is under wraps.

Belva and her family, including aunts and cousins (all total 11 people), moved into a two-bedroom apartment in Oakland's West Oakland area when she was eight years old. Later in the 1940s, she relocated to her own house in Berkeley, California, afforded by her parents.

Talking about her education, Belva graduated from Berkeley High school in 1951. She then applied to San Francisco State University and was accepted, but she could not afford it due to her parents' financial difficulties.
