Fowler then went to work as a sports reporter, production assistant, and producer/writer for NBC affiliate KCNC-TV in Denver. In 1984, he worked on KMGH-TV for several months. He later joined ESPN as host/reporter of Scholastic Sports America in July 1986, a two-year tenure.

After that, he became a sideline reporter for college football. His exclusive interview with the imprisoned former football college star Charles Thompson is regarded as iconic. 

Chris has also worked as an in-studio host for College GameDay, X-Games coverage, all major tennis tournaments, and ESPN coverage of the men's college basketball.
