Early Life: Family and Education

Drew Carey was born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, on May 23, 1958, as Drew Allison Carey. His father's name is Lewis Carey and his mother, is Beulah Carey. Among three children, Drew is the youngest of all. 

Just at the age of 8, Carey lost his father due to a brain tumor. He spent his childhood living in Cleveland, Ohio's Old Brooklyn neighborhood. Drew holds American nationality and belongs to mixed European ethnicity. 

In 1975, Carey finished his James Ford Rhodes High School schooling. After that, he went to college at Kent State University (KSU). 

Drew was either expelled from the university or dropped out. He left college after three years.

Career Beginnings

In 1979, Drew Carey joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He served four years as a Marine. He worked up to the rank of sergeant. Later, Drew then moved to Los Vegas in 1983 and worked as a waiter.

Finally, in 1985, Drew started his career as a comedian. He won an open microphone competition the following year. After that, at the Cleveland Comedy Club, he became Master of Ceremonies.
