Fitzgerald Jr's mother Carol passed away in April 2003 due to a brain hemorrhage. The footballer Larry also has a brother named Marcus Fitzgerald.

Concerning education, Larry graduated from the Academy of Holy Angeles, located in Minneapolis. Later, he attended the University of Pittsburgh.
