Summer Phoenix was born as Summer Roy Bottom on December 10, 1978, in Winter Park, Florida. Summer is among the five children born to Arlyn Sharon and her husband, John Lee Bottom. Her father was English, along with European ancestry and her mother was Jewish. 

Liberty has two brothers, River and Joaquin, and two sisters, Rain Phoenix and Liberty Phoenix. She attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts but left before graduating to pursue a career in a film career.
