Brook's parents were the British Consumers Association's first director, Caspar Brook, and Dinah, a former The Observer education reporter. The other details about Brook's siblings and early life are not available at the moment. He is of White ethnicity and holds British nationality.

Brook started his career with BBC as a news trainee in April 1976. He was appointed as a producer on Radio 4's Today program in 1978, after working attachments in Belfast, Birmingham, and Manchester. Brook has also contributed to many other BBC programs and outlets over the years, including Breakfast, Correspondent, Front Row, The Late Show, The Six O'Clock News, BBC America, BBC News Channel, Hard Talk Extra, Newshour, and Today on Radio 4.
