1992 Denver's Miss Juneteenth, Portia first started working as a researcher and producer in the Consumer News Unit of NBC4-TV. She then served as the consumer reporter for WTKR-TV in Norfolk, Virginia. Later, she worked as an evening news anchor and reporter for WTKR-TV and WAPT-TV.

Furthermore, Bruner has became the vice president of Broadcast for the Atlanta Association of Broadcast Journalists. Other than that, she enjoys mentoring girls, young women, and aspiring journalists.
